Our Background & Practice Areas

Michael Thornton, Barrister & Solicitor, was established in 2005 as a litigation practice specialising in building and construction law and landlord and tenant law. With the burgeoning leaky buildings crisis, we have developed extensive expertise in this area.

While our practice in leaky buildings initially focused on acting for property owners, we now also act for other parties caught up in this crisis, which can be devastating for all those involved.

Our team has represented many owners of stand-alone dwellings, as well as bodies corporate of varying sizes. We have acted for developers, architects, builders, vendors of leaky buildings, plasterers, and other tradesmen in defending leaky building claims.

Our team members routinely appear at the Weathertight Homes Tribunal and the courts, and have extensive experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution, having appeared at numerous mediations and settlement conferences.

We also act for a number of landlords and are routinely involved in litigation arising from the landlord-tenant relationship.

Our construction practice includes expertise in bringing and defending claims under the Construction Contracts Act.

We also have expertise in insurance litigation, particularly liability and professional indemnity claims.
